Abstract
Chromosome behavior in mitosis, chromosome number, and chromosome. morphology were investigated in V. scuuleriana var immaculata Golamco var nov., V. sanderiana Reichb.f 'Wildrnoote, and 11 Bhimayothin (V. Lenavat x V Jennie Hashimoto). Meristcmatic cells observed from the root tips of the variety, cultivar and hybrid of V. sanderiana exhibited normal mitotic activity. Mitotic index was highest in 1". Bhimayothin at 26.43%, followed by V. sanderiana var. immaculate, at 25.65%, and lowest in V sanderiana 'Wildmoon' at 21.85%. Karyotypes of the prometaphase cells revealed a diploid chromosome number of 2n=38 in all the three vandas. The chromosomes were small, with relative lengths ranging from 0 029 to 0 079 in V. sanderiana var immaculate:, 0.025 to 0.085 in V. sanderiana 'Wildmoon', and 0.032 to 0.082 in V. Bhimayothin. Chromosome type determination revealed that chromosomes 1, 3 to 10, 12, and 14 to 19 were metacentric, and chromosomes 2, 11 and 13 were submetacentric in V. sanderiana var immaculata Golamco var nov.; chromosomes 1, 3 to 19 were metacentric and chromosome 2 was submetacentric in V. sanderiana Reichb f 'Wildmoon% chromosomes 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 10, II, 13 to 17 and 19 were metacentric and chromosomes 3, 5, 6, 9, 12 and 17 were submetacentric in V. Bhimayothin (V. Lenavat x 11 Jennie Hashimoto). In the three vandas, chromosomes 1, 4, 7, 8, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 19 were all metacentric, while chromosomes 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13 and 18 were either metacentric or submetacentric
