Abstract

The study entitled “A Case Study of Cagbunga Crab Paste Producers Association of Gainza” was conducted to analyze the current situation of the association and to identify the main problem that affects all the areas of the business and its overall growth. Specifically, it aimed to: (1) establish the business profile and status of the CCPAG; (2) evaluate the external and internal environment; (3) determine the problems, issues and challenges of the CCPAG; and (4), to recommend strategies will facilitate the association towards competitiveness and for future growth of the association which was the main goal of the study.

The status of the various functional areas was determined in order to identify the main problem of CCPAG. The association currently offers semi-processed and processed flavored (spicy, pineapple and lemongrass) or original crab pastes as well as bottled laing and bicol express. The price of a 15kg semi-processed crab paste was Php 7,500and Php 120 for a 230g bottled products. CCPAG did not have their own outlet and their buyers were pasalubong stores in Bicol Region and restaurants for the semi-processed ogama or talangka. In relation to the operations of the business, they produced bottled products based on the number of orders while for the semi-processed, they produced when there is a delivery of the raw materials. CCPAG had a recovery rate of 15kg from the 25kg raw of ogama. The total maximum period of time for production and delivery is three (3) days. The current capacity differs per month depending on the order they receive but they could produce as much as 12,000 bottles per month more than double the current capacity of 6,000 bottles. As for the human resource, the association had only seven (7) members who acted as the officers as well as staff. They hired temporary workers if the other members have other commitment than producing the products of CCPAG the annual income of the organization and its liquidity, activity and profitability ratios were noted to be fluctuating.

After identifying the main problem, this study recommended a strategic plan to guide the association for further improvement of their business and resolving the issues faced by CCPAG. Each functional area was provided with goals and recommendations. For the marketing, the main strategy was focused on the market expansion to increase the brand awareness of the public by the use of internet promotions and actively promoting or advertising the products. It was also recommended that improvements on the plant facilities be done soon to cope with the anticipated increase in production brought about by anticipated increase in the demand for the products (i.e., crab paste, laing and bicol express). Furthermore, CCPAG should also consider additional sources of ogama; they could either check for suppliers in the supermarket or in other municipalities in Camarines Sur such as Canaman, Magarao and Milaor, On the other hand, hiring additional laborers for the processing plant was recommended to augment the existing labor force. Training of these new recruits however is necessary for the processing plant was recommended to augment the existing labor force. Lastly, with the anticipated increase in their production and sales, it was recommended that CCPAG should put a more organize accounting and financial system in plan.
