Abstract
Two different. accessions (#186 and #254) of p. purpureum belonging to family Gramineae were the subject of the cytological study. Their microspore mother cells were examined separately at various stages of meiosis. The diploid chromosome number of the two accessions was determined to be 2n 28. Still several cells showed a range of 2n 26, 27, 29, 30, 31, 32. 33 chromosomes. Laggards were observed on both accessions. But they Were relatively high in accession #186 of P. purpureum. Due to lagging chromosome v, unequal segregation at anaphase I were observed. Unequal distribution of chromosomes resulted-to low pollen fertility of the two accessions of Penniseraum purpureum.
