Abstract
Veggie noodles in the country are becoming known to the public due to its nutritional value which is its advantage over other noodles. In response to the prevalence of under nutrition observed among school children, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) came up with a noodle product incorporated with vegetable which is tailored fit for children. In 2009, the Department of Trade and Indstry (DTI) has proposed the idea of establishing a processing plant for veggie noodles in Pangasinan. After thorough evaluation, the municipality of Alcala, was chosen to be the beneficiary of the technology and to have the opportunity to develop the business. The Chamber of Veggie Product Producers of Alcala (CVVPA) is the one behind the processing of the veggie noodles and other vegetable based products.
The objectives of the study were: 1) present and discuss the historical background and profile of the organization; 2) describe the organization in terms of the four business functions namely: marketing, finance, production and personnel; 3) define the major problem encountered by the organization; 4) generate and evaluate alternative solutions to the identified problems; 5) identify the best solution to the main issues of the organization with the set of appropriate criteria and; 6) design an implementation plan for the chosen alternative.
Through observations and interviews with the organization’s key informants namely: Ms. Marilou Reyes and Editha Corpuz, the assessment of present strategies of the organization was done. The strengths-weaknesses-opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis was used to present the strengths and weaknesses of the organization and determine the external opportunities and threats of the organization. Furthermore, an evaluation of the organization’s internal and external factors through the use of internal factor evaluation (IFE) and external factor evaluation (EFE).
The CVPPA’s in relation to running the Alcala Livelihood and Veggie Noodle Production (ALCVNP) strengths are 1) the organization is the DTI Region I’s representative to trade fairs and expos for veggie noodles. 2) The only organization in Pangasinan which produces three (3) flavors of veggie noodles and other veggie products; and 3) Machines and equipment were provided by DTI and the LGU of Alcala for the project and; 4) The processing plant is of close proximity to market and other public places. Moreover, the organization has also its weaknesses which are 1) Minimal promotional and advertising strategies are being done by the firm 2) There is high employee turnover; 3) Poor production planning and 4) The organization has no vision and mission statements which will serve as their guide to run their business.
The opportunities facing the organization are; 1) Increasing demand for veggie based products like noodles and bread; 2) Increasing consciousness of consumers on healthier food alternatives; and 3) Increasing utilization of noodles as a main meal by many Filipinos. On the other hand, there are also threats: 1) Rising competition from well-known brands that will soon venture into veggie noodle production; 2) Constant increase in prices of raw materials and 3) Some misconception related to instant noodles brought by inaccurate information disseminated about it were encountered by the organization in implementing the project.
There were minor and major problems of the organization being identified. The major problem facing the organization which is was identified by the researcher in running the project is that of the profit potential not maximized.
Several strategies were formulated and these includes; 1) The engagement partnership with raw material suppliers; 2) The inclusion of direct marketing into promotional and advertising strategies 3) The renting of a place where the firm’s products are regularly supplied and exposed to consumers and; 4) The training and hire additional employees.
Using the Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM) each of the strategies was subjected to determining. The strategy of using direct marketing as their marketing and advertising technique has been selected as the strategy that will be implemented first and other strategies will be implemented consequently. The use of direct marketing will increase the demand for its veggie products and will make the firm use its full production capacity.
An agreement established with a raw material supplier will ensure that the firm receives vegetables that of good quality in enough amounts that it will need especially when there is an increased demand. As a result on expected increase for their veggie products, this leads to new buyers, therefore it is inevitable that a place showcasing their products would be rented. Lastly, the firm should hire additional employees because there will be a need to increase production capacity with increased demand.
