Abstract

The quality of water from four groundwater sources and twelve distribution sites at the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH), National Crop Protection Center (NCPC), and the Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB) was monitored and assessed from April to August 1999. The parameters analyzed were temperature. pH, turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), Most Probable Number (MPN) of coliforms, total hardness, chloride, nitrate, lead, and iron. Analysis of the physical parameters showed that source sites had water temperature that ranged from 29.40 to 39.90 °C and pH values of 6.47 to 7.28. Turbidity readings were from 0 to 1 NTU and TSS ranged from 32 to 78 mg/L. For the distribution sites, values respective of each physical parameter mentioned ranged from 26.50 to 37.90 °C, 6.20 to 8.40, 0 to 2 NTU, and 23 to 68 mg/L. Analysis of the chemical parameters gave the following results: Source sites - 236.25 to 860 25 ppm CaCO3 for total hardness, 53.90 to 176.10 mg/L for chloride; 0 30444 to 1.9127 mg/L for nitrogen-nitrate; 0.0004 to 0.6256 mg/L for lead and 0.0041 to 1.2150 mg/L for iron. Distribution sites - 189 to 925 ppm CaCO3 for total hardness; 43.30 to 145.50 mg/L for chloride; 0.0814 to 1.96 mg/L for nitrogen-nitrate: 0 0032 to 0.7226 mg/L for lead and 0.0042 to 0.5246 mg/L for iron. Moreover, analysis of the microbiological quality of the water samples showed MPN of coliforms that ranged from <1 to 25 MPN per 100 mL for source sites and <1 to 5 MPN per 100 mL for distribution sites. All parameters except for MPN, hardness, lead, and iron concentrations on certain months and at certain source and distribution sites, conformed with the maximum allowable limit set by the World Health Organization (WHO), Philippine Water Quality Standards for Drinking Water, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
