Abstract

The Sampaguita industry was a once prominent industry in the town of San Pedro, Laguna. Industrialization in the said town however adversely affected the industry. But despite the dying industry, there are sampaguita still growers who stay and continue with the business.

A study in the coping strategies of growers who decided to stay was conducted to determine the coping mechanisms of sampaguita grower in San Pedro, Laguna. The specific objectives were to present the profiles of the sampaguita growers; describe the business environment that affects the sampaguita industry of San Pedro; identify problems, weaknesses and gaps; identify and assess the coping mechanisms and strategies undertaken by the existing sampaguita growers and their corresponding results; and recommend strategies or solutions to sampaguita growers based on the findings of the study. These objectives were attained through the conduct of personal interviews with all the existing growers. A descriptive approach was designed to determine how sampaguita growers respond to the problems of the said industry.

A survey was conducted to gather information on the sampaguita grower’s responses in dealing with the problems in their respective farms. These coping mechanisms were analyzed and the related factors were identified. The coping mechanisms were divided into two categories which are the defensive and accommodating adaptation. In defensive adaptation, the coping mechanism is to counteract before disturbances will happen. Accommodating adaptation, on the other hand, involves confronting the likely outbreak damages.

The most common defensive adaptation strategies were to reduce household expenses to buy the needed inputs and close monitoring of the farm to prevent pest damage. The most common accommodating adaptation strategy was the minimal usage of inputs to reduce costs. The most important problem that was not solved despite the coping strategies was the lack of supply of supply by San Pedro, Laguna.

The growers are recommended to innovate their production system to address the problem of insufficient produce and thereby increase supply. Growers should try urban agriculture once the municipal government finished the research about the new technology in sampaguita production which is now adopted by Japan and found this feasible

The government with collaboration of support agencies could conduct suitable trainings to equip the growers the technical skills of sampaguita growing. They could also provide financial assistance by lending money to the sampaguita growers. Government must also extend their efforts in the research for urban agriculture and new product development.
