Abstract

The crude extract of wild sunflower stem was obtained by Soxhlet extraction using dichloromcthanc as solvent. Successive column chromatography employing gradient elution, followed by recrystalliz.ation, yielded three pure isolates namely, MLG-I, MLG-2 and MLG-3. These pure isolates were subjected to IR, UV, Ill NMR and C NMR spectroscopic analyses and snail contact toxicity assay using the golden snail, Pomace as canaliculata. MLG-1, the major constituent isolated in this study was identified to be the triterpene, stigmasterol (m.p. 155- 157 °C). MLG-2, a light yellow crystalline compound (m p. 40- 42 °C), was likely to be an unsaturated aliphatic ether. MLG-3, a white crystalline compound with m.p. 140- 142 'C was likely to be a tertiary alcohol with alkyl substituents MLG-I, MLG-2 and 1'12 and F14 at 1000 ppm concentration caused 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% golden snail mortality, respectively. Fractions F12 and F14, the most active against golden snail, were not successfully purified in this study.
