Abstract

This study assessed the credit needs and financing practices adopted by rice farmers affected by an extreme weather disturbance in selected municipalities of Laguna. A total of 100 farmers were interviewed. The data collected were analyzed using frequency tables, comparison of means using t statistics, cash flow analysis and multiple linear regression. The study focused on how Typhoon Ondoy affected the financial condition of rice farmers and their households when it hit the country in 2009. Specifically, the liquidity of the farmers immediately after the typhoon and how they financed their farm and household expenses in the following production season were analyzed. It was found that the cash position of farmers were all negative. Information regarding sources of credit and the problems they faced in borrowing was generated. The study also determined the impact of crop insurance and household savings on the cash requirement of the farmers. Lessons learned were identified so that these may be used by farmers and government officials to minimize the impact of natural calamities that may likely occur in the future.
