Abstract

Propolis from Trigona biroi foraging in Brgy. Maahas, Los Baños, Laguna is rough and flaky with aromatic odor. Physico-chemical characterization showed that the propolis obtained from T. biroi Friese has 79.63% hexane extractable substances, 6.35% ethanol extractable substances, 14.02% insoluble solids, and 0.71% ash. Melting of propolis samples was observed at 60-70°C. Refractive index of ethanol extract was determined to be 1.35. Total phenolic content was estimated to be 1.75 mg gallic acid/100g oven dried propolis using Folin-Ciocalteau method. 1H and 13C NMR analysis of the ethanol extracts of propolis suggest the presence of hydrocarbons, alkoxy groups, alkenes, aromatics, and carbonyl groups in the said extracts. GC-MS analysis showed that the hexane extract of propolis has phytol, heptacosane, 2, 6- dimethyl-1,5-heptadiene, tetracosane, hentriacosane, 2,7,11,15-tetramethyl-(E,E)-1,6,10,14- hexadecatetraen-3-ol, and methyl-3-oxours-12-en-23-oate.
