Abstract

The quality of groundwater as a source of drinking water in Barangay Putho Tuntungin (Purok 4, 5, 6), Los Banos, Laguna. was evaluated.. The physical, chemical and bacteriological characteristics of the groundwater were studied using different parameters such as pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), chloride, hardness, nitrates, sulfates, major cations (calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium), coliform count and presence of surfactant. The obtained data were statistically analyzed using the Analysis of Variance and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) to test the significance of each parameter with respect to the month of collection, age and depth ()fine well, and their interactions The pit and total dissolved solids ranged 6.7 to 8.0 and 101 to 331 mg/L. respectively. The nitrate concentration gave values from 0.24 to 19.60 mg/L, for concentration of sulfates the range was 6.15 to 28.82 mg/L, for total hardness the values varied from 281.88 to 592.28 mg/1 and for chloride the values obtained varied from 4.24 to 24.88 mg/L. The values obtained for pH. total dissolved solids, chloride, sulfate, and major cations such as sodium and calcium were all within the Maximum Allowable Limit (MAL) set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for Class A Drinking Water and Philippine Water Quality Standards Sampling site 8 and 9 exceeded the MAL for nitrate and sampling site 2 and 8 exceeded the MAL for hardness. The groundwater in the area being studied has high concentration of magnesium and potassium, which exceeded the MAL. Sampling site 1 and 7 were found to be contaminated by faecal microorganisms and had exceeded the MAL for coliform count. Presence of surfactant for the nine sampling sites was also detected but this fall within the MAL. The effect of age and depth o' the well month of collection, arid sampling site varies with respect to the parameters being measured
