Abstract

Sta. Elena Golf Club is located at Barrio Malitlit, Sta. Rosa, Laguna. It consists of a three 9-hole golf courses situated on a 100-hectare land. Different plants, both introduced and naturally occurring are found in the golf course. Generally, the dominant plant species may be classified as trees and shrubs. The focus of this major practice is on the maintenance and care for the landscape including turf grass management. During the major practice, several practices such as pruning, fertilization, irrigation, weeding, pest and disease management, and mowing were observed, studied and performed by the student. By active participation in such operations, the student acquired a deeper understanding of the processes, more than those gained by virtue of theory. Pruning is done mostly on trees with big branches. Sharp bolo, pruning shear, and chain saw were used following standard cutting procedures. Shrubs were thinned out. Fertilization is regularly done using a mixture of fertilizer both for turf and landscape plants. High nitrogen fertilizers are used on greens and applied using centrifugal spreader or walk-boom sprayer. For tees, roughs, and fairways, boom sprayer and broadcast type spreader are used and fertilizers are combined with plant growth regulator and colorants. For the ornamentals, fertilizer is applied in four to five holes around the tree. Water for irrigation is sourced from the golf club’s underground water storage or reservoir. The water levels, rain fall and temperature are constantly monitored and used for irrigation and water conservation. Automated sprinklers are used for irrigating turfs and water hose for some ornamental plants. Weeds are controlled by hand weeding or spot herbicide spraying. Selective and non-selective chemicals are used to control insects and diseases. The cutting height and frequency of mowing is determined by the area and the type of turf being used. Specific type of equipment in each area is also used to ensure proper mowing. Mowing is done regularly for greens and every other day for the rest of the course. The debris from pruning and mowing are cleaned by motorized backpack blower or raked and later collected by a truck. Other site practices such as balling out, cultivating, topdressing, rolling, edging, raking, and cleaning were also performed. Recommendations to improve the already smooth-sailing operations at the Sta. Elena Golf Club were presented.
