Abstract

The initial rate of reaction for transesterification depends on the phase of the mixture. A one-phase mixture has a faster rate of reaction than a two-phase mixture. In this study, three types of mixture were identified after adding acetone, petroleum ether and 2-propanol to each coconut oil, sunflower oil/methanol system. The different mixtures are the homogeneous emulsion, non-homogeneous emulsion and clear mixture. Their phase description was determined through visual confirmation after two minutes of vigorous shaking. Based from the miscibility performance of each solvents, the results showed that the cost suitable for coconut oil and 2-propanol having the best vegetable oil-methanol-solvent volumetric ratio 0f 8:1:1 while the most suitable solvent for sunflower oil is acetone with the best volumetric ratio of 5:1:4. The stability of each homogeneous mixture was also observed by allowing each mixture to settle over a period of one hour.
