Abstract

The quality of the groundwater as a source of drinking water in Barangay Bigaa, Cabuyao, Laguna was evaluated from July to October 1998. The physical, chemical and bacteriological characteristics of the groundwater were studied using different parameters such as pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), chloride, hardness, nitrates, sulfates, major cations (calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium), lead, and coliform count. The data obtained were statistically analyzed using the Analysis of Variance and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) to test the significance of each parameter with respect to the date of collection, age and depth of the well, and their interactions. The pH obtained varied from 6.40 to 7.37. The total dissolved solids, hardness and chloride content gave values from 211 to 536.67, 73.12 to 431.96 and 9.52 to 48.17 mg/L, respectively. Nitrate concentration ranged from 0.53 to 397.9 while sulfate had values falling within 4.23 to 57.98 mg/L. The concentration range, in ppm of major cations were 2.26 to 82.44 for calcium, 8.80 to 28.53 for magnesium, 0.0512 to 18.78 for potassium and 8.52 to 33.10 for sodium. No lead was detected in all sampling sites while the coliform count was observed to range from < 1 to 5 MPN/ 100 mL. The values obtained for pH, total dissolved solids, chloride, sulfate, hardness and the major cations except potassium were all within the Maximum Acceptable Limit (MAL) set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for Class A Drinking Water and Philippine Water Quality Standards. Only one site exceeded the MAL for nitrate that has 397.91 mg/L. NO3- N reading. The potassium concentrations above MAL were 17.87, 14.46 and 12.04 mg/L while the coliform count was 3 and 5 MPN/100 mL.
