Abstract
The peroxidase-catalyzed oxidation of phenol in presence of hydrogen peroxide was studied and the factors critical to phenol removal efficiency were investigated. Peroxidase was found to remove phenol from prepared aqueous solutions at a wide range of pH, limiting amount of hydrogen peroxide and small amount of horseradish peroxidase. At least 98% removal of phenol from 200 ppm phenol solution wan observed at the pH range of 5.0 to 8.0 and at the moat, 0.03% hydrogen peroxide solution and 1 mg/ml peroxidase solution. Phenol concentration in the test solution before and after treatment with peroxidase and hydrogen peroxide was determined using the 4- aminoantipyrine colorimetric method. The peroxidase was found to be inactivated immediately after the reaction has started, regardless of condition_ However, the reaction appeared to continue to proceed until phenol removal had been achieved
