Abstract

Field practice was conducted at Central Azucarera Don Pedro. Inc. from April 12 to until May 29, 2013. The training involved 288 hours of training in six different departments: Mills, Boiling House, Refinery, Environment Management and Safety Department, Quality Control Department and Boilers. From the basis of 12,000 tons per day capacity of the raw sugar factory, it was determined that approximately 1.63 piculs of raw sugar were produced per ton of cane and that the refining yield was computed as 1.23. Meanwhile, on the span of the operations of the boilers, it was calculated that approximately 71.81% bagasse consumption in the steam balance without vapor bleeding, while only 63.53% bagasse consumption if there is vapor bleeding. The overall bagasse consumption including that of the required for the refinery is approximately 86.49%. The correlation analysis done on certain parameters of refined sugar with that of the process liquors was found to be weekly associated with each other. Spearman's correlation coefficient was determined to have an average value of 0.050 for % Pol refined sugar correlated with the process liquors: 0.140 for color of refined sugar and 0.026 for % moisture, using the statistical software known as STATA 12. From the calculated values, it was therefore concluded that at 95% confidence level, there was no significant association between % pol, % moisture, and color of the refined sugar with the pH and color of carbonated liquor, brown II, fine liquor and concentrated liquor.
