The quality of the groundwater in Barangay Marinig (Purok 1, 2 and 3), Cabuyao, Laguna was assessed using selected biological and chemical parameters. Chemical parameters taken into consideration include pH, chloride, total hardness as calcium carbonate, nitrate-nitrogen, sulfate, total dissolved solids, heavy metal lead and major cations: calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium. The biological parameter employed was the Most Probable Number (MPN) of Coliforms.

Values obtained in all parameters except for potassium in all sampling sites and MPN of Coliforms in 2 out of 9 sampling sites had passed the maximum allowable limit (MAL) set by the Philippine Water Quality Standards for Drinking Water (PWQSDW). The values obtained were the following: pH-6.70 to 7.30, chloride — 12.69 to 40.35 mg/L, nitrate-nitrogen-0.03 to 2.82 mg/L, sulfate-5.29 to 18.59 mg/L, total dissolved solids-245 to 309 mg/L, calcium-21.62 to 48.52 mg/L, magnesium-4.72 to 19.67 mg/L, sodium-32.61 to 63.63 mg/L, potassium-10.29 to 16.22 mg/L and MPN of Coliform- < 1 to 8 MPN/100 tnL. Lead levels in all samples analyzed were below detection limits.

Statistical analysis such as Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) was used to determine the variation due to date of collection, age of well, depth of well and their interaction with one another. Results showed that groundwater quality was affected by the following factors: soil type, age of well, depth of well, rocks and minerals, population density, agricultural practices, livelihood and climatic conditions. Except for sites 3 and 7, the quality of groundwater in all other sampling sites in Barangay Marinig (Purok 1, 2 and 3), Cabuyao, Laguna falls within that prescribed under PWQSDW.
