Abstract
The levels of cadmium and lead in surface water, in sediments and in Ipomea aquatica from two rivers, Salang-langka and Pritil, in Cabuyao, Laguna were analyzed by Antonio Absorption Spectrophotometry.
The Pb and Cd concentrations in surface water and sediments were affected by sampling sites a 1% level while sampling date as source of variations was found to be significant at 5% by DMRT.
Lead and cadmium were found to be concentrated at the root systems of the plant sample, Ipomea aquatica Lead in leaves was found to be higher than the lead content of the stems and the submerged portion contained more lead than the aerial portion.
Statistical analysis of data showed that there were significant effects due to sampling sites, date of sampling and parts of portion analyzed on the lead content of plants.
Cadmium was found to be concentrated on the roots, while the level in stems and in leaves were not significantly different from each other at 1% level. The variation due to sampling site was found to be significant at 1% level. While date of sampling did not significantly affect the CD contend of plant samples.
The accumulation potential of plant was found to be affected by date of sampling at 5% while sampling sites and parts and portion analyzed affect the metal content at 1% level.
Date showed that Ipomea aquatica can accumulated lead and cadmium and can be used as biofilter for waste water.
Lead and cadmium contents of plant, surface water and sediments were found to be within within the safe limit.
