Abstract

REYES, RAUL C. University of the Philippines at Los Banos, March 1993. Determination of Some Minerals in Two Varieties of Anthurium (Kaumana and Nitta Cultivars).

Adviser: Dr. Dario C. Sabularse

Extraction of some plant minerals from Kaumana and Nitta Anthurium flowering plants was conducted using acid digestion. The extract solution was then used to determine some minerals present on Kaumana and Nitta Anthurium plant using Ion-Chromatography (Dionex 4000i). Some minerals such as Cu, Co, Fe, Mn, Na, K, Li, Mg, Ca, were found to be present at detectable levels in both Anthurium liquid extracts. The results show that in both Kaumana and Nitta Anthurium liquid extracts, transition metals such as Cu, Co, Fe and Mn were detected at a higher concentration level compared to alkali and alkaline earth metals, Li, Na, K and Mg. Higher concentration of Fe, Mn, Cu, Na, K, Ca were observed in Nitta than in Kaumana cultivar, while higher concentration of Co and Li were determined in Kaumana plant. Among the transition metals detected, Fe was found to be the most abundant mineral in both Kaumana and Nitta Anthurium liquid extracts, followed by Mn, Co and Cu (Fc>Mn>Co>Cu).
