Abstract

SAMALA, MEINRADO FETALVO. University of the Philippines Los Banos, August 1990. Studies on the Pesticidal Constituents of the Leaves of Gliricidia sepium Jacq.) Steud, (Leguminosae) : Isolation and Identification of Some Wax Components.

Adviser : Dr. William G. Padolina.

The light petroleum extract of the leaves of Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.)Steud. (Leguminosae) was found to contain waxes. Chromatographic separation ( rapid, column, and preparative thin layer chromatography ) yielded two major crystalline fractions, namely: a white solid labelled MFS1 ( 0.03 5 of dry weight of leaves ) and a white solid MF15 ( 0.05 5 of dry weight of leaves). The melting points of MFS1 and MFS5 are 64-66 "C and 71-73 'C, respectively. Based on spectroscopic data ( infrared, ultraviolet, 400 MHz 1H - NMR, 100 MHz 13C - NMR and mass spectrometry ), combustion analysis and by examination of melting point data, MFS1 appears to be a mixture of the long-chain alkanes n-heptacosane (C27H56), n-octacosane (C2058), n-nonacosane (C29H60) and n-hentriacontane (C3064). N-Nonacosane seems to be the predominant component. MFS5, on the other hand, appear's to be a mixture of the wax esters C4458802 and C409202 and possibly, their isomers. The latter wax ester seems to be the predominant component.
