Abstract

Meiotic cells and chromosomes of newly emerged male N. virescens were observed using the OLE-squash technique with lacto-aceto-orcein staining. The different stages of meiosis, namely: interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase were identified and described qualitatively and quantitatively. The mean meiotic indices of N. virescens sampled from IR36 and IR42 were 0.77 and 0.78, respectively. Three prophase I substages (leptonema, pachytene and diekinesia) were distinguished from each other through their shapes, sizes 1hp and staining ability of their chromatin contents. Fifteen chromosomes were identified during diakinesia (711 + X) at 88%

Significant differences in the cytology of male N. virescens infesting the two rice varieties were observed during interphase, leptonema, ahaphase and at the spermatid stages.
