Abstract

The study was conducted to determine the level of awareness and perception of UPLB students from Mindanao concerning the SPCPD. It also aimed to discover any relationship between their awareness level, perception, home province, classification and religion. Fifty undergraduate students from Mindanao served as the respondents for this study. Twenty two (44%) came from provinces affected by the SPCPD, while the remaining twenty eight (56 %) came from unaffected provinces. Frequencies, percentages, graphs and tables were utilized for data presentation. To determine any relationships between variables, the following test statistics were employed: Mann-Whitney U Test, Approximate T-test in p (Spearman-Rank Correlation Coefficient), Kruskall-Wallis Test and the Chi-square Test. Results from the study showed the students to have been relatively unaware of the council. Their perception of the Council is predominantly negative, believing that it was formed without proper consultation with the people of Mindanao, and that it is not the proper solution to the problems in the region. Statistical testing found no relationship between the students'home province and their perception of the council. It was also determined that there was no significant difference between the perception of students with varying levels of awareness of the council. The students'classification was also found to have no relationship with their level of awareness. Lastly, it was also determined that the students with different sources of information did not vary in their perception of the council. Any relationships between the perception of the council among Muslim and Christian students could not be tested due to the immense bias of the raw data which had only one Muslim respondent as compared to forty four Catholics and five protestants. Based on the results, it was concluded that the students have a negative perception of the SPCPD regardless of their awareness level or other variables.
