The possibility of using montmorillonite as a modifying material for sol-gel derived electrodes was investigated. The optimum ratio of montmorillonite-graphite powder for analysis was studied. The ratio for optimum analysis was found to be 30% montmorillonite-graphite powder. The uniformity of electrodes in a batch was also studied. A standard deviation of 2.16 p.A was calculated. Optimum experimental conditions were determined. Accumulation time of the electrode for 30 minutes gave the best response. By varying the deposition potential, deposition time and pH of the accumulating solution, the optimized parameters were obtained. A deposition potential of —600mV, deposition time of 180 seconds and accumulating solution with pH 5 provided the most favorable peak height response. There is a need for maintenance of constant ionic strength, hence, the supporting electrolyte giving the best result was studied. From the results obtained, the best supporting electrolyte was found to be HCI. By performing 10 trials on a 5ppm Cu (II) solution using a single electrode, the limit of detection was obtained and was found to be 12.5 ppm. Comparison was also made with the me of Montmorillonite- Modified Sol-Gel Electrode (MSGE) electrodes with Differential Pulse Adsorptive Stripping Voltammetry (DPAdSV) versus that of the AAS.
