Abstract

A STUDY OF THE PREPARATION AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF PLASTIC PRODUCTS FROM SUGAR CANE BAGASSE

PASCUAL T. TANTENGCO, JR.

ABSTRACT

Plastic products can be technically produced from sugar cane bagasse, Subsequent one-day treatments with aqueous solutions of one per cent H2S0i, and 18 per cent NaOH at room temperature and pressure were found sufficient to prepare the bagasse for molding, Higher concentrations of the reagents used and longer processing periods did not increase the recovery of fibers nor improve the quality of the resulting plastic products.

The physical properties of the plastic products varied significantly between molding treatments and with the nature of the bagasse used, Treatment means show that bagasse treated with 60 per cent Plaskon (urea-formalde-hyde resin 2) for 30 minutes at 327,6°F (15000.) and 5,000 pounds per square inch pressure gave the highest tensile strength and shearing stress. Unground bagasse gave products with higher tensile strength and shearing stress than ground bagasse. Ground bagasse, however, gave much finer texture and higher surface gloss than the unground bagasse.
