Abstract

The primaryconcern of this study was to determine the information sources of the stakeholders of land use conversion cases in Biñan, Laguna. It was also an attempt to examine the possible relationship between the information source and decisions of the stakeholders. The relationships between the stakeholders classifications and decision was also examined. Stratified random sampling was used. Samples of the study represented the stakeholders of 20 percent or (27) of the total land use conversion cases (134) in Biñan, Laguna. Samples were grouped into four classifications. These include the "landowners," "farmer beneficiaries", affected community members"and affected community leaders". Each classification had 27 stakeholders, thus, a total of 108 respondents were interviewed. Results showed that most of the information sources of stakeholders were non-media, particularly the representatives from private sectors for those who allowed conversions and ordinary conversions were identified by those who were against cases of land use conversion. Results also revealed that most of the stakeholders who allowed and did not allow conversions had few sources of information about land use conversion cases. Chi-square analysis at 1 percent level of significance, showed that there was no significant relationship between the stakeholders'decision and the amount and type of information sources. However, there were particular types of non-media sources that showed significant relationship with decisions. These were the representative from private sectors and seminars. There was also no significant relationship between the stakeholders' classification and decisions on land use conversion, but landowners and farmer beneficiaries as specific classifications of stakeholder, showed significant relationship with decisions. In addition to these, the study was also able to determine that the most of the landowners'and farmer beneficiaries'perceptions regarding cases of land use conversions were positive, while a large percentage of negative perceptions were observed among the affected community members and leaders. Lastly, the study found that majority of the information that were available to the stakeholders were information on the effects of land use conversion cases. Very few information on laws and legal procedures of conversion were available to them.
