Abstract
The emergence of online food businesses has rapidly increased ever since the COVID-19 pandemic. This study assessed the food poisoning assumptions and food safety knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of online food handlers in Calamba City, Laguna, Philippines. One hundred (100) respondents were conveniently selected from different Facebook groups to participate in the survey. The questionnaire was tested for reliability using Cronbach’s Alpha. Majority of respondents had answered 50% of the question correctly regarding food poisoning assumptions. Scores for food safety practice, in which 44.9% were able to attain at least 70%, were also relatively lower than the scores for food safety knowledge and attitudes, which showed 83.9% and 92.9%, respectively. There were no significant relationships between KAP and the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents. There were significant relationships between food safety knowledge and food poisoning signs and symptoms, as well as food safety attitudes and knowledge of high-risk food among the respondents, which showed a p-value of 0.0489 and 0.0406 respectively. Overall, it was found that food handlers' attitudes and behaviors affect how much they perceive food safety and knowledge was important in guaranteeing food safety and empowering individuals to take action to reduce the occurrence of food poisoning, and this urged intervention to prevent food poisoning. It is recommended that improving the quality and safety of food in the online business should be constantly regulated and observed by business owners and the government.
