Abstract
The effects of acid and alkaline pretreatments of banana stem (as substrate for ethanol production) were evaluated. Both pretreatments were optimized, based on contents of total carbohydrates and lignin, by varying the concentrations of 1-1,SO, and Na0I-1 (3%, 6% and 9% w/v),reaction time (20, 40, 60 min) and temperature (80, 100.5, 121°C). A Box-Behnken design was applied in order to generate experimental set-ups using these treatment factors with total sugar concentration and lignin as response variables After pretreatment, numerical optimization gave the optimum sugar yield in the liquid phase and optimum lignin content in the residue. The desirable characteristics include low sugar content in the filtrate and low lignin content in the residue. For acid pretreatment, the optimized conditions were 2.42 % w/v 1-1,SO4, 21.47 min, and 81.78 °C; these provided an optimum sugar yield of 17.30 % and a lignin yield of 17.79%. The optimized conditions for alkaline pretreatment were at 9 % w/v Na01-1, 60 min and 96.93 °C with a sugar yield of 35.40 % and a lignin yield of 13.18%.
