Abstract
Mucuna pruriens (L.) DC. is a minor crop that is considered new in terms of the level of crop breeding in the Philippines. The study aimed to elucidate the plant morphology of velvet bean (M. pruriens) local accessions in the country. Germplasm of available accession were collected from City of Batac, Ilocos Norte and Los Baños, Laguna. The samples were subjected to initial characterization; were regenerated in the field at Brgy. 27-E Capacuan for characterization and preliminary evaluation, from January to June 2022. Descriptor keys were preliminary developed based on the list of qualitative and quantitative traits of M. pruriens. The initial characterization of the pods and seeds showed that there is a variation on the accessions - particularly on pod pubescence, pod length and width, and seed length and width. Subsequent characterization of the seedling, leaf, and whole plant also displayed variation between accessions. The highest terminal leaflet length and width was observed in MP-001 (±17.81 and ±13.01 cm) while the lowest was in RGM-001 (±9.29 and ±5.42 cm); however, all the accessions have similar type of generation and twining tendency. Differences were observed across local accessions. This dictates that the germplasm can be used in crop development with the specific trait of interest. Based on the initial data, more local accessions should be charactrerized and evaluated.
