Abstract

Saccharomyces cerevisiae -BB1885 (yeast) and Rhizobium were the microorganisms used for adsorption of gold ions (Au3+) The longer the period of incubation of the free and immobilized cells to the gold solution under shaken conditions, the greater is the adsorption of Au+ One gram of free cells 'Of yeast adsorbed about 71.25 5 of Ae at ninety-six hours, while adsorbed about 60.79 0 at forty-eight Ours. Immobilized cells of yeast adsorbed about 86.93 1 of Au at three hours, while adsorbed about 57.11 0 at an optimum period ,forty-eight hours). The yeast cells have a higher % adsorption with time than This may be due to their different means of reproduction The former ass by budding, forming new cells and hew binding sites for Au.' while the latter reproduce by cell on and adsorption takes place at the polysaccharides, which ore already saturated with Au+ , as the main sites of adsorption which takes longer time for synthesis. Different HC1 concentrations were used to desorb the trapped Ah' in the immobilized cells packed in a 1.5 cm by 6.0 cm as the acid concentration increases, the '4 desorption also, increases. About 32.30 % of trapped Au.' from yeast was decorated while 34.42 % was desorbed from -H., using 1.0 N HCl, the highest concentration used, different flowrates were also applied for desorption using immobilized cells packed in a 1.5 cm by 6.0 cm column. Higher S was obtained at lower flowrates of the influent, of trapped Au'" in was desorbed at 0.5 ml/min 34.41 % was desorbed from at 1.0 ml/min.
