Abstract

Women's labor force participation (LFP) in the Philippines has remained low over the past decades, especially among married women. In response to this issue, this study examines how household responsibilities affect the labor force participation of married women, focusing on Barangay Pag-Ibig sa Nayon in Quezon City. It investigates how different forms of household responsibilities such as housework, childcare, and elderly care, contribute to labor force outcomes through the lens of the household production function and the theory of allocation of time.

Using data from 231 married women and employing a probit regression model, the study found that household responsibilities significantly influenced labor force participation. Housework and toddler care were both negatively associated with LFP, while school-age childcare showed a positive effect. Elderly care, though negatively associated, was not statistically significant. Among control variables, husband’s employment status and household income showed significant relationships with LFP.

These results align with the literature that highlights the persistent burden of household responsibilities experienced by women. Moreover, the findings emphasize the need for community-based interventions to alleviate the constraints placed on married women.
