Abstract

This study determined the time allocation of individuals in Lucena City, Quezon Province for unpaid domestic labor and analyzed how the socio-demographic factors affect it. The data used in the study is obtained through an online survey with a stylized form of time table. Descriptive analysis was used in analyzing the socio-demographic characteristics and time allocation of the respondents for four activities namely unpaid labor, work or school, leisure, rest and other activities. Findings showed that women allocate more time in doing unpaid work as compared to men who have more time for leisure activities, despite their similar time allocation for work or school. Consequently, multiple regression analysis is used to assess the effects of the socio-demographic variables on time for unpaid labor. The main effects were analyzed first before adding the interaction terms of assigned sex with marital status, household members, and employment type. In the initial regression results, age was found to be a significant predictor of time for unpaid labor. After adding the interaction terms, results showed that age, assigned sex, and household members have a positive relationship with unpaid domestic labor. Findings also showed that married females spend more time doing household responsibilities. However, in contrast with the existing studies, the effect of household members is relatively lower for women than their men counterparts. Hence, the findings of this study highlights that women spend more time doing unpaid domestic labor than men. This is influenced by the existing gender roles and household dynamics of the individuals.
