Abstract

Electronic waste, or e-waste, has been rapidly increasing, with little awareness of the risks associated with its improper disposal. Improper management of e-waste is a threat to both the human health and the environment as it contains hazardous elements that could contaminate the land, air, water, and even the food we eat.

This study analyzed the factors affecting the proper electronic waste disposal behavior among 195 residents from Barangay La Mesa, Calamba City, Laguna. Using descriptive statistics and multinomial logit regression, the research examined the socio- demographic characteristics of the respondents, their knowledge about electronic waste, and the key factors affecting their disposal behavior. Results indicate that most respondents are familiar with e-waste and its risks, with many choosing to give to itinerant recyclers or stockpile such items due to the limited proper disposal facilities in the area. There were also 28.72% of the respondents that threw their e-waste with household trash even with the knowledge of it is not safe to dispose there.

Significant factors affecting disposal behavior include residential condition, transportation ownership, and highest educational attainment of the household head . Environmental awareness, perception about e-waste recycling and the convenience of an e-waste recycling were also found significant but can be improved upon with studies regarding altruism of an individual or having an e-waste collection facility.
