Abstract

Arreola, Yolanda E. University of the Philippines at Los Baños, October, 1980. Comparative response of rice and cogon to wind factor.

Major Adviser: Dr. Enrique P. Pacardo

Lowland and upland varieties of rice (Oryza sativa) and cogon (Imperata cylindrica) were grown in plastic pails containing upland soil. After three weeks they were transferred to a wind tunnel and subjected to windy or still conditions.

The results showed that in windy condition, rice leaf turned generally yellow which later became dry whereas cogon leaf remained green on the experimental period. This differential response may be due to a faster transpiration rate in rice than in cogon. The high transpiration rate in rice may be attributed to the fact that the plant has a lower diffusive leaf resistance , greater stomatal density and thinner cuticular layer. Cogon plant on the other hand, has slower transpiration rate, lower stomatal density, high leaf resistance and much thicker cuticular layer.

The ecological implications of these findings were discussed.
