Abstract

Growth and alkaloid production of Datura metel L., both the purple flowered and white flowered varieties, under different light intensities were studied. Light intensities used were, full sunlight, 50% full sunlight. 20% full sunlight. The plants were subjected to these light treatments for fifty days.

On the basis of height, leaf count and dry matter production, optimum growth was obtained under the 20% full sunlight.

There was no significant effect on the percentage alkaloid content in the dry matter. However, total alkaloid produced per plant was markedly increased at low light intensity (20% full sunlight). Histochemical studied on alkaloid distribution were also made.
