Abstract

Bryophytes play an important role in plant propagation, as a popular potting material aside from other better known materials such as Osmunda fibers, etc. It is the aim of this study to identify the different species of bryophytes sold commercially in greater Manila area and to ascertain which species is more commonly used as potting material. The study listed 12 species of bryophytes, belonging to 12 genera, 10 families, and 4 orders, all belonging to class Musci. Racopilum cuspidigerum was the most common species of bryophyte sold in the market in terms of total weight and percent composition. Presence of a species of peatmoss, Sphagnum junghuhnianum, verified the fact that it is being used locally as a potting material.
