Abstract

The West Valley Fault earthquake may possibly strike with a magnitude of more than 7.0. To address the possibilities brought about by the earthquake, the government is constantly disseminating information related to the possible impacts and what could be done to mitigate the effects of the earthquake. Specifically, Barangay Nicolasa Virata, is one of the barangays in Cavite that has complied in formulating their Local Climate Change Action Plan (LCCAP). The purpose of this study is to determine the level of earthquake awareness and preparedness of people living near West Valley Fault in General Mariano Alvarez, Cavite. This is to determine if the action plan of the barangay is translated into the action by the people. Using a self-administered survey questionnaire, it was found out that the people in Barangay Nicolasa Virata have a low level of awareness of the impacts of the West Valley Fault earthquake, but they have a high level of preparedness. Although they are not aware of the possible consequences of the earthquake, they tend to prepare for its possible occurrence. The existence of the earthquake preparedness plan in the barangay and their participation in the programs and activities related to earthquakes are the contributing factors to their preparedness. Still, there is a need to strengthen the dissemination of information related to the possible impacts of the West Valley Fault earthquake so as to increase the participation of the residents in programs related to earthquakes and other disasters.
