Abstract
In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the food security of millions. With this said, the study aimed to understand the participation of San Diego Elementary School (SDES) members in community-based urban gardening for attaining food security amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants of the study were 11 SDES members. Findings revealed that they are involved in various community gardening activities, and receive extension advisory services from sponsors such as the Agricultural Training Institute. Using Arnstein's Ladder of Citizen Participation (1969), the form of participation they have for each activity is varied, ranging from Informing to Citizen Control. They faced several challenges in participating in community gardening such as having members with limited knowledge of urban gardening and few communication channels. They employed several interventions, some of which are agricultural extension-based, to resolve these challenges. From the findings, it is concluded that their participation in the community gardening activities depends on several factors such as their job position, and the type of activity and the people they are engaged with. These forms of participation affected their performance in community gardening, and helped enhance community participation, increase gardening skills, strengthen relationships, and improve their food security.
