Abstract

A total of 250 15-day old Bovans White cockerels were reared under a free-range production system to determine their growth performance and carcass characteristics as well as the margin over feed cost. The cockerels were randomly assigned into 5 pens and were grown until 85 days. They were were allowed to range starting at 15-day old. Liveweight, average daily feed intake, average daily gain, feed efficiency, and mortality rate were determined and the carcass characteristics in terms of carcass yield, cut-up yield, breast components, leg components, and carcass components were described. Margin over feed cost was computed by calculating feed cost per bird, value of gain per bird, and feed cost per kg of gain. It was found out that under the said production system, Bovans White cockerels had a low uniformity in terms of body weight as they grow older. Also, The cockerels had a high F/G ratio and.their weights and ADG are lower compared to other layer breeds grown in the same production system. In terms of their carcass, they had a comparable carcass and cut-up yield to other free-ranged chickens. The leg component and the overall carcass is highly composed of lean compared to fat and skin, and bone. It was also concluded that Bovans White cockerels raised under free-range production system is profitable since raising them obtained a Margin Over Feed Cost of P74.79.
