Abstract

In the food industry, keeping the quality and safety of the food being released to the market is one of the top priorities of the manufacturing company. Regulatory bodies are present in order to certify that the products available to the consumers are of good quality and are safe to consume. The Foods Department of the Laboratory Support Division of the Food and Drug Administration perform analytical test to ensure the quality of food materials being produced by food manufacturing companies. During the internship period, the intern had the privilege of observing several analytical test like Vit. A determination of heavy metals using flame AAS, determination of calcium in food supplements, and caffeine, aspartame, and saccharin determination, and determination of L-carnitine in food supplements. Several problems were encountered during the internship period. One was when the recovery of the spiked sample of flour for the Vit. Analysis did not reach the limit therefore the whole analysis would have to be performed again.Another was during the analysis of heavy metals, where the analyst accidentally set the heat of the hot plate to high, and the sample being boiled with HNO3 spattered, resulting in losses of the sample for that certain trial. The last problem was during the analysis of caffeine, aspartame, and saccharin, where the solid particles in the sample would block the filter paper of the syringe-driven filter, resulting in a difficult extraction onto the HPLC vials. Having initiative, not being tardy, and observation of proper ethics and professionalism were among the lessons learned during the internship.
