Abstract

In the 21st century, people are more aware of the safety of what they are eating. In response to seeking alternatives especially in the production side of food (agricultural products and produce), organic farming was introduced and is now a practice endorsed by the Department of Agriculture Secretary. With the popularity gained by organic farming, a lot of other agriculture practices are now having organic counterparts. One of those is the organic production of chicken wherein a study entitled Pinoy Big Broiler Project in Dolores, Quezon is concerned with. It is the practice of raising feed stuff locally in the farmer's farm using organic practices. It also involves no use of chemicals as antibiotics or medicine for colds. This study was about the preferred extension and information materials of the farmer-cooperators' of the Pinoy Big Broiler (PBB) Project in Dolores, Quezon and their opinions on what information materials or tool should be used in introducing organic chicken production. Another goal of the study is to assess their level of awareness about organic chicken production as farmer-cooperators. The result of the survey showed that farmers wanted to receive more information using seminar/training/demonstration and the use of printed materials. In terms of their opinion on what to use to introduce organic chicken production to other farmers, the results showed that the respondents favored having a seminar/training/demonstration about the practices in organic raising of chickens. The next choice for them is the use of printed materials. About their level of awareness, new practices like the use of fish amino acid and calcium phosphate concoction are still new to them and most of them are still not using it. Other practices like non-usage of medicine of antibiotics to the chickens are a well-known knowledge to them and they are using it on their farm. One of the recommendations for further studies would be the relationship of gender in success of raising organic chickens.
