Abstract

To further improve or hasten the calculation of Leaf Area Index (LAI), an experiment

was conducted to determine if digital image processing could be used as an alternative non- destructive procedure. Strawberry (Fragaria sp.) was used as the experimental plant for the

development of the method. Images of the canopy and three (3) angular views from the side at 45 degrees from the ground were taken. The images were then processed using (a) digital tracing of the whole image of the plant, whether canopy image or angular image, to get the area of the digital image and (b) ellipse fitting that approximates the whole area of the image using the area of the ellipse. A digital image processing program (ImageJ) was used to process the images. The results showed that both procedures of determining LAI through digital image processing were comparable with the manual procedure. The ellipse fitting procedure offers a faster method of area determination compared with the digital tracing.
