Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the factors affecting the use of tramline and its effects on farmers in Barangay Sampaloc, Sariaya Quezon. Primary data were obtained through personal interviews of 40 sample farmer-users and 40 farmer-non-users using a pre-tested questionnaire. Descriptive statistics was used to describe the profile of the sample respondents. A logistic regression analysis model was used to identify the various factors affecting the use of the tramline while linear regression analysis was used to determine the effects of the tramline on the farmers? hauling cost, transportation time, and post-harvest losses. Findings from the logit analysis revealed that the farmers? decision to use or not use the tramline was significantly influenced by land tenure status, distance of the farm from the nearest road, and distance of the farm from the tramline. The coefficient of the tenure status is negative indicating that with a less secure tenure status, farmers are less likely to utilize the tramline. The positive sign for the coefficient of the distance of the farm from the nearest road means that farmers whose farms are located farther from the nearest road that is accessible by vehicles are more likely to utilize the tramline. As for the negative coefficient of the distance of tramline from the farm, this indicates that the farther the farm is from the tramline, the less likely they are to use it. All variables mentioned were significant at 10 percent probability level. The linear regression analysis considered only the volume transported and dummy variable, taking the value of 1 for use of tramline and 0 otherwise. The results showed that the dummy variable has a significant effect on all three dependent variables, namely, hauling cost, transportation time, and post-harvest losses. The 40 farmer users were asked to rate the performance of the tramline. Results revealed that out of the 40 respondents, 17 farmers encounter specific problems with respect to the usage of tramline. The primary concern of the farmers is the location of the power house since this area becomes immediately muddy when rain pours resulting to the inability of vehicles to access the area. This study recommends i) further evaluation of the location of the tramline, also ii) conduct trainings and/or lectures on how to operate it and lastly, iii) conduct for further studies regarding the evaluation of the tramline with respect to its planning, designs, and location for it to beneficial for a greater number of farmers.
