Abstract

A 63-day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of increasing eubiotic lignocellulose levels on growth performance, caloric efficiency, fecal quality and dietary economics of growing-finishing pigs. A total of 72 growing pigs (initial BW = 42.9 ± 2.3 kg Duroc × [Landrace × Yorkshire]) were distributed randomly to three treatments following a randomized complete block design with initial weight and gender as the blocking factors. Every treatment was replicated 6 times with 4 pigs per replicate. The three dietary treatments were a corn-soybean meal basal diet (T1), T1 with 0.5% eubiotic lignocellulose and T1 with 1.0% eubiotic lignocellulose. Treatment diets were fed in a 3-phase feeding program from d 0 to 21, d 21 to 42, and d 42 to 63. Feed and caloric efficiencies were negatively (linear, P < 0.09) affected with increasing eubiotic lignocellulose levels from d 0 to 21 and d 42 to 63. However, ADG, F/G and caloric efficiency was (linear, P < 0.03) improved with the addition of eubiotic lignocellulose in the diet fed during d 21 to 42. Overall (d 0 to 63), increasing levels of eubiotic lignocellulose in the diet had no significant effects on ADG, ADFI, F/G, caloric efficiency and fecal quality of growing-finishing pigs. However, feed cost/pig tended (linear, P = 0.06) to increase with increasing levels of eubiotic lignocellulose in the diet, which resulted in increased (linear, P = 0.07) feed cost/kg gain of growing-finishing pigs. In conclusion, addition of eubiotic lignocellulose in grow-finish diets was only effective and economical in 60 to 80-kg pigs while it was not in the other stages.
