Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the feeding level of mungbean seed meal in hog pre-starter and starter diets. A total of 20 crossbred (landrace x large white x duroc) pre- starter pigs were used and blocked according to body weight and age. Pigs were randomly distributed to 20 pens following a randomized completely block design (RCBD). Each treatment was replicated 4 times with 1 pig per replicate. Results showed that body weight, average daily gain, average daily feed consumption, and feed conversion ratio of pigs fed diets with 5 to 20% MSM were not significantly different from pigs fed the control diet. However, increasing mungbean seed meal in the diets reduced the feed cost efficiency of pigs. Within the condition under which this experiment was conducted, it can be concluded that mungbean seed meal can be used up to 20% without affecting the performance of pre starter and starter pigs. However, the price of MSM should be considered. Surplus of low grade or low cost mungbean seed meal can be used in feeding pigs as source of protein and possibly reduce the cost of feeds.
