Abstract

Water Quality Guidelines and General Effluent Standards of 2008, Revising DENR Administrative Order (DAO) No.34 and No. 35, Series of 1990, also known as the DAO 2008-XX will be implemented in the future. The purpose of this study is to evaluate influent and effluent characteristics of four selected treatment plants with conventional activated sludge (CAS) process and capacity of 30 m³/day and above in relation the aforementioned standard. Parameters such as Ammonia, Nitrate and Orthophosphate were tested and evaluated. There is a 99.7% probability that all the WWTP will be non-compliant if these standards are implemented. Advance biological nutrient removal treatment processes such as Modified Ludzack Ettinger (MLE), Modified Bardepho Process (MBP), Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) and Moving Bed Film Bioreactor (MBBR) were explored as possible upgrade for the treatment plants. For the three treatment plants, the appropriate upgrade is the Modified Ludzack Ettinger. Since it focuses only on Nitrogen removal, additional chemical dosing tanks will be used for Phosphorus removal. The remaining treatment plant has two options, if land can be acquired, MOdified Ludzack Ettinger is applicable. If not, the appropriate upgrade is Membrane Bioreactor. Also for Membrane Bioreactor, chemical dosing tanks are needed for Phosphorus removal.
