Weed control and herbicide selectivity in direct-seeded rice (Oryza sativa L.) and selected crops at the Bayer CropScience Southeast Asia Field Research and Development Center: an apprenticeship

Abstract

The major practice was conducted at the experimental station of Bayer CropScience in Masiit, Calauan, Laguna from April 4 to May 27, 2011. The objectives of the major practice were to train the student to 1) analyze the efficacy of herbicides applied pre- and post-emergence at different rates in direct-seeded rice; 2) determine the dominant weeds infesting direct-seeded rice; 3) analyze the effect of different times of application of Compound 1 treated paddy water on non-target plants; and 4) acquire new knowledge and techniques in weed seed collection and weed seed storage for use in experiments. Herbicide efficacy and selectivity test in direct-seed rice was conducted to determine the phytotoxicity symptoms and efficacy of the combination of the newly formulated herbicides, Compound 1 (ALS inhibitor) and Compound 2 (HPPD inhibitor). Slight stunting and bleaching were observed 2 days after application of the pre-emergence herbicide treatments but rice recovered from initial injury 8 days after treatment. Slight stunting was also observed 4 days after application of the mid-post emergence herbicide treatments but rice recovered 8 days after treatment. All the treatments for both pre-emergence and mid-post emergence showed good selectivity. Both tank mix and ready-to-use treatments also provided better control when applied pre-emergence than when applied at mid-post emergence. Multiple fruits were observed in the non-target plants applied with Compound 1-treated water in both drenched and top drenched application of the eggplant. Seeds of Ludwigia octovalvis (Jacq.) Raven, Leptochloa chinensis (L.) Nees, and Monochoria vaginalis (Burm.f.) C. Presl were collected within the vicinity of Bayer CropScience station and from surrounding fields in Calauan. The weed seeds are small and turned brown when sundried. The weed seeds were stored in plastic containers and small bottles and placed in cold storage rooms for use in future herbicide studies. In addition to the herbicide studies, the student also observed other studies including insecticide, fungicide and molluscicides which gave her an insight about pest management strategies in relation to weed management approaches.
