Abstract

The major practice was conducted at The Farm at San Benito, Lipa City, Batangas from May to June 2013. The student accomplished the practicum and was able to experience, analyze, and learn involved in lettuce production. The Farm at San Benito has a small scale production which is composed of different vegetable crops and herbs that are planted in raised beds, and several fruit trees. The Farm does not use inorganic fertilizers and instead applies kakawate leaves as their organic fertilizer. The lettuce varieties that are grown in the farm are Grand Rapids and Romaine. The beds have 5 rows which are spaced 20 cm apart while within the rows, the plants are 10 cm apart. Weeds, pests, and diseases are controlled with the use of cultural management practices such as crop rotation and multiple cropping because the use of chemical control is prohibited in the farm. The harvesting process is done manually which also includes sorting of the marketable and non-marketable lettuce. After harvest, the produce goes directly to The Farm at San Benito?s restaurant where the price of lettuce averages 300 Php per kilogram. The total sales (P22,260.00) minus the total expenses (P 6,427.30) gave a total net income for one cropping season of lettuce at The Farm equal to P 15, 832.70.
