Abstract

To determine the effects of feeding rice bran D2 and commercial starter feed on the growth performance, average daily fecal output, average daily urine volume and average daily water intake of Philippine native pigs, 12 barrows were divided into two groups six (Trial 1) of which were placed in individual pen and another six (Trial 2) were placed in a metabolism cage for 28 days. Pigs in Trial 1 and Trial 2 were fed rice bran D2 (RBD2) and commercial starter feed (CSF), respectively. Descriptive statistics was used to compare the data from the two feeding trials. ADFI for PNPs fed RBD2 and CSF was 500 ± 77.47 and 683.154 ± 140.23 g, respectively. ADGs of PNPs fed RBD2 and CSF were 95.24 ± 25.22 and 257.14 ± 47.33 g, respectively and FCR of 5.44 ± 0.92 and 2.75 ± 0.77, respectively. Apparent DM digestibility for the CSF was 76.34 ± 5.56 %. ADWI of PNPs was 2.47 ± 0.61 liters. PNPs? ADFO was 350.0 ± 98.95 g and ADUV was 210.0 ± 23.43 ml. PNPs have lower ADFI and ADG but higher FCR compared to hybrid pigs. Apparent DM digestibility, ADWI, ADFO and ADUV of PNPs are almost the same with hybrid pigs. The use of CSF instead of RBD2 resulted in apparently greater cost per kg gain and estimated feed cost to reach marketable weight but lessens the days (from 217 to 112 days) to reach the marketable weight of Philippine native pigs.
