Abstract

The major practice on the production and management of mango (Mangifera indica L.) was conducted at Bacungan Farm from April to May 2013 in Puerto Princesa, Palawan. Bacungan Farm has 28,000 mango trees, mostly ?Carabao‟ variety covering a total area of 310 ha. Most of the mango trees are grafted and planted using 10 x 10 m spacing. Flowering of mango trees are induced using First Cote (N-15.5%, Ca-19%, CaO-26%). Fertilization is done using Yield Max (N-0.41, K2O-0.19, Ca-0.18), an organic based liquid fertilizer. Cultural, biological and chemical methods of controlling pests are employed. Harvesting of mango is done either by handpicking or by the use of picking poles. Fruits are harvested 120 days after flower induction. After harvesting, fruits are checked if there is presence of mango pulp weevil at the Mango Pulp Weevil Detection Center. After screening, fruits are transported to other towns while others are treated with calcium carbide to be sold on the farm‟s market stalls. Mango production for a hectare in a year in Bacungan Farm has a total yield of 10,120 kilos while the average yield per hectare in the Philippines is 4,345 kilos. The total cost for a hectare amounted to ,311. This covers material cost, labor cost, miscellaneous and other farm tools while the total returns are equivalent to ,532 from harvest, thus the net return was ,857 based on a farm gate price of 󌕖/kilo of large size mango. For every peso invested in mango production in Bacungan Farm, there is a corresponding 0.71 peso income. The problems encountered are pests and diseases, not enough skilled and dedicated workers, lack of soil analysis, use of harmful calcium carbide, and absence of facilities to cater the handling process.
