Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effects of biosolids as partial cement replacement on the split tensile strength of concrete and the workability of the fresh concrete mixture. Biosolids was chosen as the cement replacement with an objective of reducing the negative impacts of the construction industry to the environment as well as to provide a way to dispose biosolids without environmental risks since it wouldn't leach if added in the concrete mix. This study was limited to the determination of the Split Tensile Strength of Type I Portland cement with oven-dried biosolids as a partial cement replacement, 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%. The concrete mixtures were casted in cylindrical steel molds with diameter of 6 inches and height of 12 inches. The water to cement ratio used for the concrete mix is 0.5 and water curing is done for 28 days. After the tests were done, it was found out that Split tensile Strength and the workability of the concrete decreased with the increase in amount of biosolids. However, the statistical test showed that there is no significant difference in the strength of the ordinary Portland Concrete and the concrete specimen with 5% biosolids replacement. It is concluded that Type I Portland Cement can be substituted with 5% biosolids since this does not affect the strength.
