Abstract

The practicum was conducted at the Regional Standards and Testing Laboratory DOST IV-A, Barangay Timugan, Los Baños, Laguna from April to May 2012 for a period of 150 hours. The trainee was assigned to the Microbiology and Chemistry Laboratories wherein the hour requirement was equally divided (75 hours) and allotted for both the laboratories. The trainee was first acquainted to the Microbiology Division where she performed certain techniques and analysis such as bacteriology of water and wastewater, gram staining, media preparation, and detection of certain microorganisms of public health concern. In the Chemistry Division, the trainee assisted in the analysis of water parameters such as the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Oil and Grease by Partition-Gravimetric method, pH determination, and metal acid digestion and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and in the analysis of food parameters such as Protein Analysis. The student was able to become familiar with the existing pieces of equipment and their uses in the laboratory. In addition to the principles, procedures, and techniques acquired in the training, the trainee learned how to work and socialize with professionals. The laboratory experience enabled her to fully appreciate food technology and adequately prepared her for future work.
